Itzel Castillo

(She/Her)

Advanced Practicum Internist

Itzel Martinez Castillo joins Anesis Therapy from the UW Madison Sandra Rosenbaum School of Social Work, where she is focusing on mental health with a sub-focus on substance use. Itzel earned her Bachelor's in Social Work from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee and brings a culturally informed perspective to her practice.

"I believe in a holistic approach to mental health that honors the connection between the mind, body, and spirit," Itzel shares. "Each person's experience is shaped by many layers such as cultural, emotional, physical, and spiritual wellness. I want to take into consideration all of these aspects as I find these integral in the healing process, all while being mindful that everyone's individual journey to healing is unique."

As a certified medical interpreter fluent in Spanish, Itzel provides accessible and culturally attuned support to Spanish-speaking clients. Her background and language skills are particularly valuable as she develops her interest in exploring the mental health needs of undocumented immigrants and refugees in Madison, with a focus on how national immigration policies affect emotional well-being and access to services for these populations.

Itzel's approach centers on building trust from the very first interaction. She focuses on meeting clients where they are, honoring their strengths, exploring their motivations, and creating a safe space to work through deeper emotional experiences. "I believe in walking alongside my clients," she explains, "rather than leading or directing them."

Outside of her professional work, Itzel enjoys biking, hiking, and discovering new food spots around Madison. She actively participates in a local basketball group rooted in Oaxaca traditions, where her family is from. Her passion for cultural expression also shines through her love of dance—Itzel practiced Mexican Folkloric and Aztec dance in her youth and continues to choreograph for weddings and quinceañeras.

Itzel's combination of professional training, cultural background, and commitment to holistic care makes her a compassionate and effective advocate for her clients at Anesis Therapy.
